The Colonial Theatre
Revival Revives City
Located in downtown Pittsfield, Massachusetts the Colonial Theatre is a Gilded Age architectural gem brought back to life as a performing arts center in the heart of the Berkshires.

David Fleming became the Colonial’s executive director in June 2006. The 800-seat Colonial Theatre reopened August 29, 2006, with the Broadway musical, “Rent.” In January 2007, Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick held his inaugural celebration on its stage. Months later, James Taylor rented the theater for two performances before sell-out crowds to record his “One Man Band” tour for TV and DVD release.

“For me, it was a slam dunk,” Fleming says. “I’ve been a businessman for thirty-five years, the last thirty of them in show business. I’ve been involved in historic theaters since 1978. I had a decent sense of what to look for: a community surrounded by cultural attractions; customers who are educated, involved people with disposable income; tourism and second home ownership; and a wonderful physical plant. As a businessperson, I always evaluate the market base. There is a lot of potential here.”

The Colonial is an appropriate symbol of the re-emergence of Pittsfield as the economic and cultural center of the Berkshires. A restored and active Colonial Theatre, together with Pittsfield’s other cultural attractions and businesses, is creating jobs, attracting and inspiring audiences, contributing to rising real estate values and adding vitality back to a city that has been recreating itself as a people-center from its earlier days as a manufacturing center.
