A Unique Collaboration Between Art and Education
Gallery 51 on Main Street in North Adams is the result of a unique collaboration between area business and community leaders, the City of North Adams and the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA). Located at 51 Main Street, Gallery 51 is operated by MCLA and features the works of international, national and local artists, including MCLA faculty and students.
Galery 51 is directed by Jonathan Secor, who coordinates performances and special projects for MCLA of which the gallery is a part of his overall responsibilities. In the past two years the gallery has presented 19 exhibitions involving about 150 artists and has drawn approximately 7.000 visitors. The gallery also provides administrative experience for college interns and students enrolled in the growing arts administration program.
Gallery 51 is an ideal example of the coordination between the educational institutions of the Berkshires and the arts in the region. Berkshire Creative, through the Education Initiative, will work to create other opportunities for collaboration of this kind to occur.
