Vision and Leadership
Julie Boyd founded Barrington Stage Company in 1995. Since that time BSC has become the fastest growing arts venue in Berkshire County, attracting some 35,000 patrons each year, and gaining national recognition for its superior quality productions and comprehensive educational programming.

Since 1995 Barrington Stage has produced several award-winning plays and musicals including Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, Three Viewings, A View From The Roof, Ears On a Beatle, Mack and Mabel, South Pacific, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Follies, The Burnt Part Boys and Wonder of the World have been named among the top ten productions of the year in many area newspapers -- leading the BOSTON GLOBE to laud BSC as “one of the jewels in the state’s crown.”

In 2005, BSC achieved two important milestones. First, its original production of William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin’s musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, which had its world premiere at BSC in 2004, took Broadway by storm, capturing two Tony Awards (for Best Book and Best Featured Actor), Three Drama Desk Awards, and numerous other awards. Secondly, BSC became the proud owner of a theatre - a 1912 former vaudeville house in downtown Pittsfield. Following a nine-month period of renovation, BSC’s new theatre officially re-opened its doors in the summer of 2006.

Julie and BSC are a case study in the Creative Economy: her vision and artistic leadership has created a unique new business in the Berkshires. Seasonal and year round job figures get into the hundreds counting administrators, cast and crew. Her support for new artistic work has created valuable exports to other markets.
